ART SCHOOL
Thinking Visual at Blessington Community College, 2014

Art School is a project founded by artist, curator and consultant Jennie Guy. It focuses on establishing new interfaces between contemporary art and sites of education. Art School is invested in a longer-term enquiry into pedagogical shifts in education through the means of art.

Art School takes place as a series of independent projects, exhibitions, workshop and residency programmes, bringing active contemporary artists into educational systems to inspire and expand their teachings. Part of the Art School framework is developing different ways of communicating about the process-based work that goes into each workshop, residency, or exhibition that it explores. Curatorially, Art School seeks to engage students with active contemporary artists. The platform continues to develop strong, mutually-beneficial relationships with it’s collaborating artists, as they are creating decisive interventions within school curricula.

For this project Thinking Visual, Jennie Guy proposed a new type of art-school residency within Blessington Community College, where artists John Beattie and Sven Anderson worked with transition year students exploring activities that lie between producing new artworks and developing conceptual frameworks.

This residency provided a unique experience for both the students and the school to focus on this process-driven phase of contemporary art production, highlighting vital links between the artist as researcher and students as inventive learners. John Beattie gives a focus to moving image work and Sven Anderson evolves sonic and scultptural frames of reference with the students.

These residencies were supported through Thinking Visual, an arts-in-education initiative organised by Wicklow County Arts Office in collaboration with Mermaid Arts Centre. Thinking Visual provides secondary school students from various locations around the county with access to first-hand experiences of contemporary art and contemporary practitioner’s processes.

Jennie Guy has been asked to represent Art School via visiting lectures, talks or seminars by Dublin Institute of Technology, National College of Art and Design(NCAD), Marino Institute of Education, Piet Zwart, the Spanish CAPP Programme, Belfast Exposed, among others.
